Underage marriage reasons & Impacts

Underage marriage is the act of marrying someone who is below the legal age of marriage, which varies depending on the country and jurisdiction. In many countries, the legal age of marriage is 18 years old, while in some places, it may be lower with parental consent or other exceptions. Underage marriage is a serious violation of human rights and can have negative consequences for the physical, emotional, and social well-being of the individuals involved, particularly for the young girl who is often the victim of such practices. This makes us wondering about the reasons behind underage marriage or what it is called early marriage. Here are some causes of underage marriage:

Poverty: In some parts of the world, families marry off their underage daughters to reduce the financial burden on them.

Tradition: In some cultures, marrying off underage girls is a tradition that has been passed down for generations.

Gender inequality: In some societies, girls are considered inferior to boys, and marrying them off at an early age is seen as a way to control their behavior.

Lack of education: In many cases, girls who are married off at an early age are not able to attend school and receive an education.

However, child marriage can lead to a range of issues such as early pregnancies, increased risk of maternal and infant mortality, domestic violence, poverty, and lack of access to education and economic opportunities. Furthermore, child marriage often perpetuates a cycle of poverty and illiteracy, as girls who are married early are less likely to complete their education and acquire skills necessary to participate fully in society.

Many countries and international organizations have taken steps to prevent underage marriage, including enacting laws and policies to increase the legal age of marriage, promoting education and awareness, and providing support for victims of child marriage. However, despite these efforts, underage marriage continues to be a prevalent issue in many parts of the world.
