Gender in Morocco

Feminists especially in the Arab world have always been battling for equal rights, opportunities and the right for self-expression. However, Moroccan women specifically enjoy more visibility and presence done within other Muslim societies, they have engaged in a long historical process to gain political, social and economics rights.

Geography has been playing a catalystic role in Moroccan women visibility, ( moroccan proximity to Europe ) .Moroccan openess paved the way to the flow through borders of some western values such as liberalisation, individualism, freedom and human rights, these values have shaped moroccan women feminists and political activists.  moroccan women develop a kind of awarness, enlightenment

To rise up women's position and inculcate new values in Moroccan society against status.

Moroccan women's activism started as early as 1946 with the creation of the first women's association ( akhawat safae ) , those later who set up the seeds of the first feminist movement in Morocco before independence. Purity sisters called for the abolition of polygamy, equal right and more presence in public space. these demands and rights will make the basics of Moroccan women struggle in post-colonial Morocco

Moroccan women have started to gain some rights in the first constitution 1962 the first right to vote " men and women enjoy equal political rights", since that time women were legible to vote, and others in the new constitution 2011, where polygamy is conditioned by the first wife consent and divorce is no more the absolute right of men

Moroccan women's "progress" and "visibility" was done through multiple stages starting from post colonial period, few amendment concerning the right to vote, polygamy and divorce. without responding to women's expectations and aspirations because even though the noticeable mobility converning women's progress, the feminist movement in Morocco still faces majot challenges there's a clear mismatch between the constitution and its implementation.

The Moroccan society is assumed to be still anchored ro patriarchy, we are a male dominant society par excellence !!!
